My care has involved a truly integrated multidisciplinary team: an integrative medicine doctor overseeing my NCIM mistletoe treatment to help manage chemotherapy side effects; my GP and local practice nurse supervising my first injections and monitoring my general wellbeing; and an oncologist who has remained open and receptive to conversations about integrative care. At the centre of it all, Bobby Sira has been the lynchpin — my touchstone and constant reference point — bringing everything together as an integrative oncology specialist pharmacist and Ayurveda practitioner.
Two and a half years ago, with a diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer and a comorbidity of heart failure, I entered a destabilising time in my life. I needed to find some balance and was fortunate to find integrative cancer care on the 'Yes to Life' website, and Bobby Sira in particular.
After a partial colectomy, a liver resection and many rounds of chemo, I reached a short spell in NED. Unfortunately, a recent scan showed tumours in my peritoneum and I needed to go back on chemotherapy. I had been thinking about mistletoe therapy for some time and decided now was the time to act. Bobby guided me in the process. I was delighted that my oncologist was not dismissive of my wishes, he listened, was open and supportive, as he has been with all other complementary therapies we have introduced. Support from my GP was also forthcoming and welcome. My local practice nurse oversaw my first self injection. My integrative medicine doctor monitors my response as we look for the optimal dosage of mistletoe treatment, Iscador Quercus in my case.
I find myself at the centre of a great medical team, respectful of each other's approach and working seamlessly towards the same goal. Surrounding that, I have another community of supportive family and friends.
From a bewildering start, when it was easy to lose my sense of self, I now have agency and autonomy in my treatment. I have moved from exhaustion to having energy, from digestive upset to comfort, and from imbalance to balance. In all, I have a sense of being held, of being content and comfortable within myself. I am pulling myself together with the support and knowledge of those around me, and with the seamless integration of standard and complementary treatments, experiencing the best of all worlds.

WHAT INTEGRATIVE ONCOLOGY MEANS
Integrative oncology combines conventional cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, with evidence-based complementary therapies, supporting the whole person, body, mind and spirit, throughout the cancer journey. It is not an alternative to your oncology care, but a considered layer alongside it, always guided by what is safe for your specific treatment. |
