About
PharmAveda is founded upon 20 years of experience working in the NHS and private sector as a clinical pharmacist and in Healthcare Development to improve services offered to patients. Over the years I have keenly observed and participated in the changes that have occurred in healthcare in the UK and it has been an eye opening journey. So much has evolved in the way of technology and the way we live our lives today that is radically different to 20 years ago. Whether it is a parallel or not, we cannot ignore the huge increases in long term conditions and serious diagnosis leading to reduced life span and debility from illness and multiple medication regimens.
The beginning of a journey to see Eastern and Western science join together.
About 15 years ago I made the first steps into my yoga journey which was inspired by the desire to be fit, healthy and youthful, and slowly transpired to be a much deeper and profound journey inspiring a few leaps of faith to change the way I worked and how I could help others. I discovered how vast and all-encompassing the science of yoga is, with implications for health and happiness that are profoundly rooted in human existence. With continued practice it will change the way you live your life, deeply influencing your physical, mental and emotional health.
The combination of modern and ancient knowledge of health merge to blossom powerful healing.
The science of Yoga is a parallel of Mindfulness and their roots are very much interconnected like everything around us. In my own personal story it was this interconnectedness involving the biochemistry, pharmacology and physiology of my own body as it reacted violently to a pathology, that allowed me to heal from the inside using the techniques passed down from history. The important learning was how deeply connected current clinical knowledge is to harnessing the strength of eastern tradition. We need all science - old and new - working together in tandem to bring long lasting health benefits.
Holistic care ensures every aspect of an individual and their environment is taken into consideration.
Every part is connected to the whole.
After deciding to depart from 'climbing the ladder' of my corporate career, I found myself leap into academia to learn about Ayurveda - the ancient Medicine of India. Through this I learnt what the word 'holistic' means and not the commonly prescribed use in business proposals for patient services. With this knowledge, I completed a project involving 75 frail and elderly patients with repeated admissions into hospitals and risk of falls and poly-pharmacy. Over the six month period, I was able to contribute to the deprescribing of their medicines, improvement in health and a 65% reduction in hospital admissions. All by employing the holistic approach of Ayurveda. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Equanimity is a daily effort that reaps far-reaching benefits to yourself and others.
Yoga and clinical therapy is proving to be a successful means of changing peoples attitudes to health and allowing the body to rediscover its own healing potential. Every body has the right to be healthy and happy and somewhere along the way we have given up this right and accepted a variety of ill-fated options in life. Most of this is simply due to imbalance. Each aspect of our life requires balance, just as each system of our body requires a control system that balances the body; the homeostatic function for equilibrium. On the smallest scale of our cells, this equilibrium is what gives us good health, and the disequilibrium is responsible for ill health and unhappiness. Stress is a major contributory factor to imbalance and techniques of Meditation and Mindfulness can give profound benefits to reducing this to a normal, not a heightened function.
