Forest Memory / Araṇya Smṛti

To retreat to the forest these days has a very different meaning to forest dwelling in ancient India, particularly in Vedic times. We may think of Prince Siddhartha, who renounced his worldly life to live in solitude in nature, in order to realise him-Self as a Buddha. He, like many great sages and monks made the forest his home and learnt to live with the unpredictable forces of nature. Herein is a very important metaphor we should all embrace:
“Make the forest your home and learn to live with the unpredictable forces of nature.

For men and boys

For International Mens Day 2019 the theme centred around  'Making a Difference for Men and Boys'.
  • Ask yourself ‘Who is your role model as a man?’
  • What do YOU do to be a positive role model for men and boys in today’s society?
  • How can you ‘lead by example’ to ensure a new generation of physically, mentally and emotionally healthy young men?
  • What does it mean to be masculine today and is there a correlation between the rapidly rising concerns of mental health issues and suicide in men under 45 with societal change?

HOW MUCH OF YOUR LIFE IS SEEN THROUGH A SCREEN?
Picture
Ask yourself honestly how often you truly experience what is happening around you and within you?

When did you last see an amazing sunrise or sunset? Did you stop and marvel at the utter magic of the moment?
Or did you grab your smartphone to ‘click’ a picture, or turn your back on the scene and take a selfie? Did you then proceed to edit the image and post on a social media app or did you settle back into the moment?

How many mindless moments are lost to our smartphone screens and how many mindful moments are interrupted by our (or someone else's) smartphone?

A question I have asked countless times and have found countless answers from teachers, friends, strangers and the far-reaching web. Yet, none stuck in my head, and I never really sat down to think if I could sum it up in a simple, short phrase. Until my 3-year old son enlightened me.
"Meditation is a boat that takes you home.

CONSCIOUSNESS, THE BRAIN & BEHAVIOUR

Introduction

When I teach Cyclic Meditation and people tell me about the effects they experience in the days following their sessions, I find myself looking deeper into the mechanisms of consciousness and how we are able to affect them. I look to find the answers in the realms of modern physiology and pharmacology to help people understand how the ancient ‘scientists’, through experimentation, realised that brain patterns and body responses could be enhanced or altered through concentration and inner awareness.

Cyclic Meditation (see previous post) offers a beautiful symbiosis of stillness and action and brings you perfectly into the present moment. Using alternating stimulation and relaxation it allows the body and mind to go deeper into silence by incorporating simple yoga postures as well as sound and visual stimulation.

“Don’t use shortcuts in life;
have the conviction to learn to
walk the path.”
A simple but powerful message scribbled in my journal while I travelled around India in 2014 discovering what is important to me and the future. The message continues to echo within me today and is the force that has willed me to create and be PharmAveda, a process that took over three years. I follow the belief that what you nurture slowly, grows well.

Sitting with feelings

I recently watched the actress Uma Thurman give a very mindful response to a sensitive question that clearly took her by surprise. Her ability to pause and just observe herself before responding, was inspiring and highly commendable. Sometimes sitting for a brief moment with our feelings can stop us making an unnecessary and impulsive reaction.

This requires a degree of emotional intelligence and mindfulness.

understand health through health

The World Health Organisation defines health as a "state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease" (WHO, 2010).

Is health and wellbeing an absence of illness, disease or mental distress or is it an achievement of physical and mental fitness?

Our health is affected by many factors such as the environment, the existence or absence of a support network, where we live, our finances, as well as our lifestyle. Volumes have been written on the subject of health and wellbeing - in the end 'health' is just a word, and every word has a meaning. What makes the difference is what it means to you.
You will hear about healthy lifestyles, the best new remedies or exercise regimes, but these will not work for everybody or forever. Your commitment to your own health and wellbeing status can be enhanced by understanding all the factors that govern your health - past, present and future.
